Geneva's flea markets

Geneva keeps its flea market on the Plaine de Plainpalais, all year round and twice a week, and has since 1970. Midweek, around 300 traders are on the list: some have a fixed pitch, others come day by day and set up along the route, so how many appear depends on the weather. At the weekend the brocante circles the edge of the plaine, with antiques, books, magazines, records, CDs and clothes, specialists and curious strollers side by side. The tpg stop Plainpalais is by the square, and on 1 August, the national holiday, the market stays closed.

Once a month, at the start of the month, it carries on into a second weekend day. And indoors in Eaux-Vives, 17 Terra, a ground-floor pop-up shop, hands its space to a brocante for a week roughly once a month: professional dealers with furniture, mirrors, paintings, jewellery, lamps and tableware. The tram stops a few steps from the door.
